Obama Scholarships: A College Education Within Reach

in College
For many people, a bright future starts with good education. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.

Although the economy has dramatically fallen, college prices have continued to rise for many years. Tuition and housing costs often far exceed scholarship offers. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. A large number of these people are working mothers. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. The President believes in this and has begun a mission to create scholarships for moms. Because of his efforts many people now refer to Federal Pell Grants as Obama grants. With these grants, college-bound students can receive over $5,000 to pay for school. This is an increase of $1,000 over the previous maximum, and the goal is to help working mothers return to school. Working mothers can pay for tuition and books or even daycare if that allows them to attend school.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is also a very valuable program. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. A grant for a working mother as well as a tax credit can help fund much-appreciated educational advancement. There are almost no restrictions on where and what a student studies. With more incentives, more ambitious adults will realize their goal to get a college degree.

Obama's efforts to improve education show that he takes this issue seriously. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. There is also emphasis on encouraging more students to consider community college. A 2-year degree or the time spent learning a technical school from a community college can be a tremendous asset.

In his 2007 Reclaiming the American Dream speech, Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." The President has shown a good effort to support his words through action. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
